BWB 29 - CIM, Bluebeam, and Layout

In this episode of Brewing With BIM we venture outside of BIM to talk about its civil counterpart, CIM.

So what is CIM. CIM stands for Civil Information Modeling. Like BIM it centers around leveraging information filled designs to better collaborate and communicate on infrastructure projects.

While Civil 3D is a powerful CAD/calculation tool, many are missing out on the additional functionality Civil 3D provides. Some examples of CIM in Civil 3D include:

  • QTO

  • Various analysis

  • Leveraging the dynamic capabilities

  • Automation with templates

  • Clash Detection

  • Visualization

  • Integrate GIS/Asset Management

  • As Built creation (there is a fun workflow we discuss involving feature extraction with Infraworks with Civil 3D)

  • and so much more I am forgetting

In this episode we also discuss Bluebeam Studio, vectorized orthos, and laying out with pdfs. While typically not recommended, laying out in pdfs is becoming more reliable due to Bluebeam’s publishing from CAD and scaling capabilities.

We also discuss upcoming presentations regarding Autodesk Point Layout in AutoCAD, past presentations such as our recent Festival of BIM Dynamo presentation, and a recent Construction Dorks podcast Joey was on. They were all great topics paired with equally great tangents.
